His contract, as I understand it, is a not small part of the contributing factors that got Sirius into their financial predicament. They might possibly be better off without him. JMO.

The reality is that the majority of Sirius subscribers came over for just one reason, and that is Howard. IMHO, if Stern leaves at the end of this year, it will result in a fairly drastic number of cancellations. Not everyone of course, but I'd hazard a guess that easily 10-20% of subs will leave. Stern payed his way with the first million subs who joined just for him.

    1. Howard wants to work less, he is filthy rich now and money isnt the reason for him any longer.
    2. His show for 5 years has been on satellite and avoiding FCC, it would have to drastically change to move back to regular radio... probably killing his show.
    3. Sirius can keep him at a fraction, allowing him to work less and still keep the Stern Show and its 1.5M+ dedicated followers and the 3M+ semi followers.
    1. Howard's said many times that he has some sort of sickness when it comes to money, that he never feels he has enough, and doesn't even tend to spend alot of money on himself except for his homes. He definitely has more than enough to last his entire life (and then some).
    2. Put him on free radio tomorrow, he'd destroy the ratings, doesn't matter what the restrictions are. Look what happened when he left.
    3. That's the way I see it as well, that he'll return for 3 days a week (and maybe just 2), and 10-12 weeks of vacation a year. Sirius/XM can save a few bucks and still keep him (and the subs) around.

Although, this is jmo, this could be huge for new subscribers as well. If Stern does leave, then Sirius/XM may offer huge deals to get back lost subscribers. Could be a huge savings for all in the end.

It's doubtful at this point what's going to happen. Whatever happens, I'll follow Howard wherever he goes.

My opinion though, is that he isn't going anywhere. He loves being in full control of his show, and he already said
he'd NEVER go back to terrestrial radio.
